Sometimes, because of our circumstances, we find it hard to believe that God, our Papa, really cares about us. We know that we oftentimes say and do the things that would not please Him, and we fear that we are being punished, or that God no longer loves us.
God describes Himself to Moses in Exodus 34:5; He called Himself "The Lord, the Lord the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin." (NIV) Yes, the rest of the passage speaks of Him "punishing the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation", as "He does not leave the guilty unpunished".
Can you imagine how bad things would be for us, as we all find ourselves guilty on so many occasions? But God loves us so much that He sent His son, Jesus Christ to make atonement for us (John 3:16). Yes, Jesus took All our punishment upon Himself on the cross. As a result, we obtain God's immeasurable and abounding mercy, favor, grace, and forgiveness, even when we don't deserve it.
Take heart, God is for us and not against us. His desire is that we would grasp how wide and long, high and deep is His love for us (Eph. 3:18-19). He is very concerned about us! We are His and He wants only what's best for us.
Holy Spirit, please strengthen us with power to be able to understand and embrace this love that Christ has for us; this love that surpasses our knowledge so that we can stand in difficult times knowing that God will never leave us or forsake us. He loves us, and He is for us. Amen!
